OTTAWA - With warmer weather and clear roads on the way, Motorcycle Awareness Month in May is a time for motorists and motorcyclists to be aware of one another and stay safe, says the Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada.

"Motorcyclists will be out in force as the weather gets warmer, which makes May the perfect month for Motorcycle Awareness," says Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport. "All motorists are reminded to safely share the road with motorcycles to help keep our roads safe."

Kellee Irwin, Chair of the Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada says "promoting the safety of motorcyclists to all drivers and vehicles on the road is the top priority for the month of May."

More than 670,000 licenced motorcycles and scooters are back on the roads each spring across Canada with over 52,000 new street-legal and off-road motorcycles sold each year.

"More and more Canadians are discovering motorcycling as a safe, convenient and affordable mode of transportation, says Irwin. Our goal is to educate all motorists on one another to keep the roads crash-free."

Irwin says safety campaigns such as Motorcycle Awareness Month play a big role in ensuring this trend continues. To ensure a safe riding season, the Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada offers these tips for motorcyclists and other drivers:

Tips for Motorists

  • Keep a safe distance when following a motorcycle – at least two seconds
  • Motorcyclists use a full lane – treat them like all other vehicles
  • Check mirrors and blind spots frequently – motorcycles can be hidden entirely in your blind spot
  • Pay special attention at intersections where almost 50% of motorcycle collisions occur

Tips for Motorcyclists

  • Keep a safe distance around you and maintain proper lane position
  • Check your mirrors and blind spots frequently
  • Be extra alert at intersections
  • Be seen! Wear bright colours and reflective clothing, and ride with your lights on
  • Be safe! Always wear an approved motorcycle helmet and protective gear
  • Ride at your own comfort level, be aware of wildlife and road conditions

Motorcyclist Confederation of Canada

The Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada (MCC) is the national not-for-profit advocacy organization for the promotion of motorcycling interests "pursuing a better riding experience for all". For more information and to download your own Motorcycle Awareness Month safety poster, visit

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The 2015 Vancouver  Motorcycle Show, presented by Dalton Timmis Insurance, was a strong indicator that the industry in British Columbia continues to thrive. Despite significant rain across two of the event’s three days, enthusiasts turned out in force to the event, the 34th annual Motorcycle Show in BC.

In total, the event drew 31,768 enthusiasts to see the three-day manufacturers’ showcase.

“Not only did we see a strong attendance to launch the 2015 motorcycling season in British Columbia, exhibitors reported some of the strongest sales figures in years,” said Show Manager Laurie Paetz. “All weekend long, fans of the sport were incredibly excited to see all of the extraordinary models and amazing performances at this years show.”

The event featured hundreds of new motorcycles, scooters, ATVs, and more; motorcycle stunts by Team Empire and ATV stunts by Bill Hitchon; demonstrations from the Pacific Coast Mini Road Racing Association and the Canadian Pacific Trials Association; the Yamaha Riding Academy for Kids and Yamaha “How-To” learning sessions; appearances by seven-time land speed record holder, Valerie Thompson and three-time Canadian National MX1 Champion, Colton Facciotti; and so much more.

Two lucky fans also went home with brand new motorcycles. A 2015 Kawasaki Ninja EX300, courtesy of Canadian Kawasaki and your local Kawasaki dealers was drawn on Friday as a part of SHE Rides Night, and the grand prize - a 2015 Triumph Bonneville Newchurch Commemorative Special Edition motorcycle was drawn on Sunday.

Produced by Power Sport Services, the Motorcycle Show - Vancouver features some of the biggest names in motorcycle production, including BMW Motorrad, BRP, Deeley Harley-Davidson, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Polaris, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory, Yamaha and many more.
